February 10, 2015—The Rust College faculty met in Professional Development Morning for the second scheduled workshop focusing on the Quality Enhancement Plan, <b>BCATS</b><span style="font-size: x-small;"><b>2</b> - </span>“Building Communities Academically for Total Student Success: Improving First Year Basic Math Skills.” The meeting was held in the Heard Auditorium of the Business and Computer Science Building on campus. Under the leadership of Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Sandra C. Vaughn, the focus of the workshop was “Faculty Think Tanks,” which is a key concept of the QEP approved by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges last fall. Presenters were Director of the QEP/Chair of First Year Experience Dr. Kenneth E. Jones and Director of Student Support Services Mrs. Chiquita Walls. The presentation offered a theoretical framework for faculty think tanks as a form of faculty learning communities and spelled out the specifics of how think tanks are to inform the activities of the first year student contextual learning communities which will be implemented in the fall of 2015. The presentation provided structure for how Basic Math courses are to be paired with Intermediate Algebra for students identified for remedial support in Math and who will form the learning communities. Holly Springs, MS (Nov. 11, 2014)--Addressing the QEP topic, "Building Communities Academically for Total Student Sucess (BCATS2): Improving First-Year Student Math Skills," the Rust College faculty held the first of several professional development workshops scheduled for the first year of the five-year Quality Enhancement Plan. Under the leadership of Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Sandra Vaughn and QEP Director Dr. Kenneth E. Jones, representatives from each of the five academic divisions (and some staff) assembled in the Heard Auditorium of the Business and Computer Science Building to focus on "Math in the Real World." The invited consultant was Dr. Latricia Scriven, visiting professor of Mathematics at Florida A&M University. Dr. Scriven's unfettered enthusiasm for Math was infectious and clearly inspired the members of the faculty to get engaged in the activities of the QEP.<br />

The Rust College faculty spent Wednesday morning, March 20, 2013, focusing solely on the QEP topic, Building Communities Academically for Total Student Success (B-CATS2). Vice President of Academic Affairs/Academic Dean Dr. Paul Lampley designated this half-day session of the monthly "Professional Development Morning" as a time for the faculty to engage in the nuts and bolts of the developing QEP. The faculty were asked to provide feedback to the Core Committee of the QEP as it moves into the final stages of presenting a finished document to the College in preparation for submission to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Components of the working document were separated by subject and assigned to several faculty discussion groups. Each group reported out to the open session, giving their reflections on how aspects of the evolving plan can work or what needs to be revised. In addition to faculty leaders, other comments were made by President David Beckley and SACS Liaison Dr. Sandra Vaughn. Dr. Kenneth E. Jones, QEP Director, and members of the Core Committee provided information to the faculty about the work and nature of the QEP process.</div>

<st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on"></st1:placename></st1:place>The Core Committee of the Rust College QEP met on Wednesday, August 22, 2012, at the <st1:placename w:st="on">COPE</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">Center</st1:placetype> in the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">McCoy</st1:placename> <st1:placename w:st="on">Administration</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">Building</st1:placetype></st1:place> on campus. The Committee discussed the current topic under consideration for the QEP, “Learning Communities that Strengthen the Academic Performance of First Year Students.” With QEP Director Dr. Kenneth E. Jones chairing, the committee was diligent in its discussion of the meaning of learning communities, different types of learning communities employed at other institutions, and which types of learning communities might best be proposed that would increase academic performance in the first year experience. The Committee also considered samples of how QEP documents are to be structured as recommended by the QEP Handbook posted on the SACSCOC website. Members of the Committee were given assignments to be reported at the next QEP meeting, mainly ideas for desired student learning outcomes, actions to be implemented, and timelines for implementation. The Committee also discussed promotional themes for the proposed QEP topic and future roles for students and the larger <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">Rust</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">College</st1:placetype></st1:place> community for involvement in the QEP.</div>

<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Results of the Faculty/Staff Attitudinal QEP Survey <o:p></o:p></b></div>

It has already been reported that those in attendance at the Managers’ Institute at Lake Tiak O’Khata, in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Louisville</st1:city>, <st1:state w:st="on">MS</st1:state></st1:place>, last May strongly supported the proposed QEP topic which focuses on learning communities for strengthening the academic performance of first year students. Now faculty and staff have shared their views on the QEP topic at the Pre-Planning Conference held on campus, August 9-10, 2012. One hundred and two (102) college professionals (staff and faculty) were asked to respond to a survey designed to assess their attitudes on the meaning of learning communities, the feasibility of implementing learning communities within a college-wide setting, and their level of commitment to the idea of making learning communities part of the college’s formula for academic success. Generally, the findings were as follows.</div>

1. A learning community groups students as cohorts or partners and provides them structured, uniform curricular and co-curricular experiences with the goal of achieving positive learning outcomes.</div>

Holly Springs, MS—Consensus is gaining quickly for a proposal to establish learning communities as an effective means of strengthening the academic performance of first-year students. The proposed topic of the Rust College Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) was one of 10 potential topic areas that emerged last spring from focus groups asked to make recommendations for the Plan. The QEP is a key component of the college’s preparation for reaffirmation of accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) in 2014. Submitted prior to the actual visit by SACS, the QEP must be a comprehensive, campus-wide strategy that addresses a systemic area of need within the academic community, with clearly defined outcomes and expectations for <place w:st="on"><placename w:st="on">Rust</placename> <placetype w:st="on">College</placetype></place> students. The QEP must be approved by SACS, implemented over a five-year period and periodically assessed to determine the extent to which its goals are being met.<br />
Over a two-week period in the spring of 2012, groups consisting of faculty, staff and students were charged by President David L. Beckley to take a close look at institutional data on a range of both curricular and extracurricular areas. After addressing college data, the groups then submitted abstracts of proposed plausible designs for the QEP that would yield long-term benefits for the students. In addition to proposing learning communities that would strengthen the academic performance of first year students, other topics included enhanced use of technology, emphasis on critical thinking and reading, increasing cultural sensitivity, and bolstering basic skills in Science and Math. “Creating Learning Communities that Strengthen the Academic Performance of First-Year Students” emerged as the leading topic from among the focus groups and was given affirmative consideration by President Beckley and the President’s Cabinet. <br />
At the annual Managers’ Institute at Lake Tiak O’Khata, in Louisville, MS, May 17-18, 2012, President Beckley introduced Dr. Kenneth E. Jones, a member of the Humanities Division faculty, as the leader of the QEP. Dr. Jones administered to faculty and staff who attended the institute a survey designed to assess managers’ attitudes about the proposed QEP topic, “Creating Learning Communities that Strengthen the Academic Performance of First-Year Students.” The results of the survey show that 85% of the respondents either strongly agreed or agreed that “Rust College…should be able to create learning communities around a range of subject matters, programs or disciplines." Eighty-eight percent agreed or strongly agreed that “first year students who study together…, having shared goals and shared academic experiences, can demonstrate improved basic learning skills.” And similar agreement was found on items that addressed levels of motivation to support learning communities, personal input in helping learning communities lead to academic success, and the extent that the entire college community might be seen as contributing to effective learning communities.<br />
As Rust College begins the 2012-13 academic year, all faculty members, staff, students, and the college-wide community will have opportunities to reflect on the topic as Rust College completes the final stages of deciding what the QEP focus will be.
